How to Use a Map Page 11 Topographic Symbols Man-made structures are shown as small black square (for most house size structures) or odd-shaped black structures, if a discernable shape can be made on the map. Buildings that are ruins or shells are shown as small hollow squares. Ruins are usually labeled "Ruins" on the map. Click to Enlarge Densely populated areas like cities and large towns do not show individual buildings, unless those buildings are large or landmarks (churches, large government buildings, etc). The built up area is shown as a solid dark pink area. Newly constructed built-up areas (built since the last map edition) are shown in purple.
