Two soldiers, recently discharged from Ft McDowell, traveled through the Superstition Mountains on the Old Military Trail, when they flushed out, and shot at, a deer. Not finding the deer, the two happened onto a dark red outcropping of rich gold ore. Later, the two were found dead near Black Top Mesa in the Superstitions.

In 1937, a man named Jenkins, his wife, and two daughters picnicked in the Superstitions, and found a pretty quartz rock that was very heavy. Later, he was told it was heavily laden with gold. Before he could go back into the mountains again, he died from a heart attack. His wife could not remember where they were.
