Treasure Hunting Page 5
What about equipment?
That depends largely on what type of treasure your going for and what you want to spend.
Most people typically think of a treasure hunter as somebody like Mel Fisher, the discoverer of the Atocha. He literally found millions upon millions of dollars of lost Spanish treasures sitting on the bottom of the ocean just off the Florida coast. But, he also had millions invested in the search, taking many, many years, and employing a lot of people. He also had investors to look out for. Yes, you can say that Mel was a treasure hunter, but most treasure hunters are just like you and me. We go out on the weekend to the local park, a nearby ghost town site, or a gold bearing river and "hunt" our treasure. The tools of the trade varies accordingly.
Metal detectors have become the standard of the treasure hunter. Any object made of metal can be located accurately with a good metal detector. Go to our section on Metal Detecting for a more in depth discussion.
Going for gold can open a huge area for the treasure hunter. Anything from panning, to sluicing, to high banking, to dredging, to dry washing to sniping, to nugget shooting, to mossing. It just depends on how deep you want to get into it. Go to our section on Recreational Prospecting for a more in depth discussion on going for gold.
But, beyond the recreational prospector and the metal detectorist is an area of treasure hunting that is more akin to the caliber of treasure hunter like Mel Fisher. This is the treasure hunter that picks out a particular lost treasure, such as a lost mine or cache of stolen gold coins, and digs into the history of the treasure, does the research that is necessary, gathers the equipment necessary, goes out searching for it, and yes, even finds it. It doesn't have to be something as big as the Atocha. It can be a small cache of $40,000 buried by outlaws being pursued by an angry posse. For this, our entire Research area is dedicated.
Treasure hunting is a lot of fun. It's great for the "loner," and equally great for whole families. Think of the memories that your youngster will have when he (or she) goes out looking for old ghost towns relics and comes back with a host of old memories. Whether you looking for old coins or chest full of gold, both can be exciting and rewarding. Doing the research and actually finding what your searching for is a hobby anyone can participate in.
